Background of the Study
Quantum computing holds immense promise for various sectors, including healthcare, finance, and academia. Despite the rapid advancements in quantum technology, many countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, face challenges in adopting quantum computing due to factors like lack of infrastructure, skilled personnel, and awareness. Nigerian universities, including the University of Jos, Plateau State, are at the crossroads of adopting quantum computing as part of their academic and research initiatives. The feasibility of quantum computing adoption in these institutions depends on various factors, including technological readiness, faculty expertise, and the availability of quantum hardware and software resources (Jones et al., 2024).
This study aims to investigate the feasibility of adopting quantum computing in Nigerian universities, using the University of Jos as a case study. It will explore the infrastructure, resources, and expertise needed to successfully integrate quantum computing into the academic and research activities of the university, and provide recommendations for overcoming the challenges associated with its adoption.
Statement of the Problem
The University of Jos, Plateau State, like many other universities in Nigeria, faces significant barriers to adopting quantum computing. These include limited access to quantum computing infrastructure, a lack of trained faculty and staff, and financial constraints. The potential benefits of quantum computing for academic research, particularly in fields such as cryptography and artificial intelligence, cannot be realized without a clear strategy for its adoption. This study aims to investigate these barriers and explore the feasibility of quantum computing adoption at the University of Jos.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the technological readiness of the University of Jos for quantum computing adoption.
To identify the key challenges hindering the adoption of quantum computing at the University of Jos.
To recommend strategies for facilitating the adoption of quantum computing in Nigerian universities, with a focus on the University of Jos.
Research Questions
What is the current technological readiness of the University of Jos for adopting quantum computing?
What challenges prevent the adoption of quantum computing at the University of Jos?
What strategies can be implemented to facilitate the adoption of quantum computing at the University of Jos?
Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of the feasibility of quantum computing adoption in Nigerian universities. By focusing on the University of Jos, it will provide insights into the specific challenges and opportunities faced by higher educational institutions in Nigeria regarding quantum computing. The findings will serve as a foundation for other universities in the region to develop strategies for integrating quantum computing into their academic and research programs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the feasibility of quantum computing adoption at the University of Jos, Plateau State. It will primarily address technological readiness, faculty expertise, and the necessary infrastructure for quantum computing. The research will not delve into broader national policies or the global quantum computing landscape.
